Our students are recognized for their strong academic achievement as well as for their development as responsible and caring citizens. The rigorous ES curriculum has been developed from U.S. standards that RIS has adopted school-wide. Core subjects are based on the American Education Reaches Out (AERO) standards and taught by the grade-level classroom teachers. We integrate Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop to provide a balanced literacy model, and science and math are inquiry-based courses with a focus on critical thinking—all skills that are vital for success in the future. Across all grades, students have access to devices and lessons about the proper use of technology so teachers and students can safely use digital tools and resources in innovative and creative ways. In grades 1 and 2, each student has access to a class iPad, and in grades 3–5, RIS has a 1:1 Chromebook program.
Beyond the core subjects of math, reading, writing, science, and social studies, your child will have daily opportunities to experience and explore other interests and talents in their specialist subjects—art, music, physical education, a second language, and values. Our students are also introduced to skills and concepts in health and wellness. All elementary students are required to take Thai language and literacy, and our non-Thai students also learn about Thai culture. Collectively, these subjects not only offer elementary students a well-rounded school experience, but they help our children learn how to be considerate world citizens who are aware of the importance of caring about other people and our environment.
Our students’ social and emotional well-being is further supported by the Second Step curriculum. Grades 1-5
Every day is a good day for learning and making friends in elementary school. Most days start out with circle time. This is a community building time when students and teachers can address issues in the class or in the world or sometimes share short lessons on health or community issues. From there students move into core subject and specialist lessons. Each day has 2 blocks of reading and writing and an extended math period. Listening and speaking are integrated into each subject throughout the day. Elementary puts a lot of emphasis on collaborative learning and students spend time throughout the day working in small groups and on collaborative projects. We take pride in the nurturing the student-centered learning environment we provide our children.

Grade 6-8
The middle school curriculum at RIS is based on a philosophy of “exposure, exploration, and experimentation.” The middle school years are a time of significant change for young people. We believe it is our duty to present our students with a broad range of learning opportunities across a variety of content areas.
At its core, our curriculum centers around language arts, social studies, math, and science. The scope and sequence of these subjects are guided by the American Education Reaches Out (AERO) standards. The language arts department applies elements of the workshop model and uses the 6+1® Traits Writing framework to guide students toward English usage proficiency. Math and science modules are based on both the Next Generation Science Standards and the AERO standards. Our core content teachers employ resources from a broad spectrum of curricula to shape learning opportunities for students as they cover the required standards.
Health, wellness, and values are also integral subjects in the MS curriculum. In our stand-alone health class, students learn about physical, mental, social, and digital health. Our Advisory program focuses on social and emotional well-being, as well as interpersonal skills, digital literacy, and college- and career-readiness.
Electives
Students are offered a wealth of elective choices in middle school. These opportunities for exploration include modern languages (Mandarin, Spanish, and Thai), culinary arts, design technology, industrial design and woodwork, computer science, and visual art, among several others. Students frequently report that their favorite feature of middle school is the different choices they have for new and interesting areas of learning.
Clubs and extracurricular activities are also an integral part of the middle school experience. Our students have the opportunity to

Support
Our middle school language arts and social studies teachers use a co-teaching model, which means that in many classes two teachers are in one classroom at the same time. This allows teachers to spend more time identifying specific student’s needs and allows more opportunities for small-group and one-on-one instruction. Co-teachers are also able to enhance rich learning environments with abundant visual supports, diversified instructional delivery, and small teacher-to-student ratios.
The middle school further offers students a Focus Block each day—a 45-minute period during which students are encouraged to direct their own learning. Students can use this time to work with content-area teachers to clarify their understanding of a particular topic, to attend classes designed to apply and extend their learning, or to participate in intervention classes to close gaps in certain proficiencies
Students arrive by 7:00 am to get to their lockers, talk with friends, and make it to their first classes on time. After the first block, students have a 20-minute milk break, during which the MS Makerspace is open for students to create and explore all sorts of engineering and design-based projects, including 3D-printed forms. The MS Lounge is also open for students to read from our library of over 1,000 books, play chess and other board games, or hang out and talk with friends. In addition, five ping-pong tables are available for students’ use during break times. Students also have access to the athletic fields and basketball courts. Typically, they grab a snack or drink in the canteen during milk break. Then they return for two class periods before a 40-minute lunch break, during which all of the aforementioned spaces and activities are available to them. Throughout the day, students attend their core classes along with two electives. Our 1:1 laptop program ensures that every student has access to and is engaged with Internet-ready technology in each class. Many teachers collaborate with other departments to design cross-curricular projects that demand synthesis of content, depth of knowledge, and application of skills.
Grade 9-12
Courses in grades 9–12 are modeled after an American curriculum, adapted and enriched to serve our international student population. This core college-preparatory curriculum allows students to identify and develop their individual interests throughout their high school years. We begin in grades 9 and 10 by building a strong foundation in the fundamental subjects: English, mathematics, science, and social studies, with additional courses providing balance and creating a diverse learning experience for each student. These include physical education, the arts, values, additional modern languages, and a range of enticing electives.
In grades 11 and 12, students continue to build their knowledge base by choosing from a broad selection of advanced courses—currently over 50 IB classes and 20 AP classes—as well as an array of general courses and electives.
All students in grades 8–11 are given a detailed Program of Studies to help make informed choices about their academic pathway and the courses they wish to take. Students are encouraged to share this information with their parents and to spend time consulting with teachers and counselors whenever possible about specific classes.
High school students begin most days with their homeroom teacher and classmates. This provides opportunities for participation and supported growth for all students, as well as ensures ongoing connections. Students then move on to their daily classes—five periods including an extended morning break—then a break for lunch before the final block of the day. RIS is excited to be integrating a flexible learning block in the high school schedule to give students a chance to get extra help from teachers, take on additional learning opportunities, meet with club or activity advisors, and complete other work with classmates and teachers. Seelos Residence is a small on-campus boarding facility, staffed by qualified teachers who offer a caring, inclusive, and student-centered environment. Students receive daily academic support in study hall and are provided with math and science tutors weekly. Living on campus gives students more time for academics but also allows them to become involved in the wide variety of dynamic extracurricular activities on offer.
Students have access to RIS facilities in their free time as well as to diverse organized outings around Bangkok on weekends. The staff at Seelos promote and celebrate academic success, as well as encourage personal development, collaboration, and social responsibility through the Duke of Edinburgh program.
Surrounding Area
Bangkok is the capital and most populous city of Thailand. It is known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon or simply Krung Thep. The city occupies 1,568.7 square kilometres (605.7 sq mi) in the Chao Phraya River delta in central Thailand and has an estimated population of 10.539 million as of 2020, 15.3 percent of the country's population. Over fourteen million people (22.2 percent) lived within the surrounding Bangkok Metropolitan Region at the 2010 census, making Bangkok an extreme primate city, dwarfing Thailand's other urban centres in both size and importance to the national economy.
Bangkok traces its roots to a small trading post during the Ayutthaya Kingdom in the 15th century, which eventually grew and became the site of two capital cities: Thonburi in 1768 and Rattanakosin in 1782. Bangkok was at the heart of the modernization of Siam, later renamed Thailand, during the late-19th century, as the country faced pressures from the West. The city was at the centre of Thailand's political struggles throughout the 20th century, as the country abolished absolute monarchy, adopted constitutional rule, and underwent numerous coups and several uprisings. The city, incorporated as a special administrative area under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration in 1972, grew rapidly during the 1960s through the 1980s and now exerts a significant impact on Thailand's politics, economy, education, media and modern society.
The Asian investment boom in the 1980s and 1990s led many multinational corporations to locate their regional headquarters in Bangkok. The city is now a regional force in finance and business. It is an international hub for transport and health care, and has emerged as a centre for the arts, fashion, and entertainment. The city is known for its street life and cultural landmarks, as well as its red-light districts. The Grand Palace and Buddhist temples including Wat Arun and Wat Pho stand in contrast with other tourist attractions such as the nightlife scenes of Khaosan Road and Patpong. Bangkok is among the world's top tourist destinations, and has been named the world's most visited city consistently in several international rankings.
Facilities
RIS is located on a beautifully manicured 29-acre clean-air campus with separate buildings for elementary, middle school, and high school. The facilities at RIS allow our students and teachers the tools and resources they need to make the most of their learning, including a vibrant performing arts program and a comprehensive athletics program with over 60 sports teams. As well as our purpose-built facilities highlighted below, our students enjoy art studios, choir and music rooms, two large multipurpose gyms, two full-sized covered gyms, squash courts, and PE classrooms. Students boarding at Seelos Residence enjoy private or shared college-style dorms and access to all the campus has to offer.
Football Fields
RIS has two multipurpose regulation-size fields. One is a FIFA-approved artificial turf used for both 11-a-side football and rugby. The other is natural grass field large enough to fit two regulation-size football pitches as well as a smaller pitch and is used for PE classes, softball, archery, rugby, and ultimate Frisbee, among others.
Pools
RIS boasts two exceptional, recently renovated pools: Phoenix pool measures 25m x 50m—officially Olympic size and concurrent with FINA standards; Godbout pool is our shallower 25m pool, that’s filter system was upgraded to an automatic salt-chlorination system. Phoenix pool has seen major upgrades, including a special PVC lining, starter blocks for both short- and long-course events, a synthetic rubber pool deck, a state-of-the-art LCD scoreboard, and a timing system with highly sensitive touch pads. Sails, extending across the entire pool, provide shade to keep the water, deck, and viewing areas cooler.
Tennis Courts
Our two tennis courts have recently been resurfaced and are popular for students of all ages, from our tiny beginners to successful Varsity team players.
Fitness Center
The Phoenix Fitness Center is our newly remodeled gym where HS students and staff can work out using any of the cardio machines (stair steppers, treadmills, elliptical trainers, rowers, and stationary bikes), free weights, weight machines, and CrossFit area, all while listening to music through our state-of-the-art speaker system.
Yoga Room
The yoga room is not only the ideal space for students to practice yoga and mediation, but it is also used for many other activities, such as dance, aerobics, kickboxing, and CrossFit. The room can accommodate up to 24 participants and includes mats, blocks, and straps for yoga and TRX, as well as boxing bags, blockers, and gloves for kickboxing. Adjacent to the yoga room, a tranquil lounge allows our students and faculty to relax and prepare for their mindfulness practice.
Performing Arts Center (PAC)
Our 300-seat, tiered Performing Arts Center (PAC) is where RIS students proudly present their band, choir, drama, and musical productions. The PAC is also the ideal space for showcasing student and faculty talent shows, the annual Easter and Christmas performances, and the always inspiring TEDxYouth talks. Besides the main stage, the PAC also features mirrored practice rooms and two large dressing rooms.
Recording Studio
RIS is one of the only schools in Thailand with a fully equipped recording studio. Featuring top-end digital-recording and sound-editing technology and supervised by trained staff, the studio is used to make professional recordings of music classes and choirs, as well as high-quality recordings of students’ modern language oral exams for external grading. A sound engineer also offers an EDP course in the recording studio that covers the basics of audio production, including microphone technique, digital audio editing/mixing, audio for video, and electronic music production.
Culinary Arts Center
Our new Culinary Arts Center is a state-of-the-art kitchen where students can learn everything from basic culinary skills to how to prepare a complete meal. The space is equipped with 6 cooking stations, each with an oven and a cooktop. Stainless steel appliances and granite countertops allow for easy, hygienic cleanup. The PA system, with its recessed ceiling speakers, ensures that instruction and guidance can be heard in this 155m2 open-plan room. Also featured is a spacious teaching station where instructors gather students to demonstrate techniques, monitor practice, set up ingredients, and offer tastings.
Robotics Lab
This sole function of this space is for students to explore their creativity. They can work together, in or out of class time, and use different types of materials to develop innovative devices and experiment with all sorts of tools, including 3D printers, motors, actuators, and microcontrollers with a range of sensors. Students can also build robots, both for fun in robotics class or to compete in VEX robotic events. You may even see the odd indoor drone maneuvering around the room. Many students just like to hang out in the room to collaborate on assignments or workshops. The HS Technology club also meets here and has a significant input into how we develop and use the space.
MS MakerSpace
The MS MakerSpace is a collaborative workspace where students and staff are encouraged to explore, play, learn, and build on new or previous ideas. The flexible, contemporary workspace is also used to hold workshops and offers support for classroom and EDP projects. With its tools and building materials, 3D printer, and electronic components, the MakerSpace is one of several places where students can choose to spend their lunch or milk breaks exploring their own interests while being engaged in creative, hands-on activities.
Ceramics Studio
In the spacious ceramics studio we have 10 potter’s wheels, 2 large electric kilns, and plenty of table space for students to explore a diverse range of creative techniques, from sculpture and handbuilding to glazing and decorating. The ceramics studio is the ideal space for young artists to improve their creativity and problem-solving skills that are vital for today’s 21st-century learners.

RIS has 60 sports teams coached by RIS staff, many of which participate in both domestic and international athletic competitions. Locally, RIS belongs to the Bangkok International School Athletic Conference (BISAC), which provides our students with a high level of competition against other schools in Thailand throughout the school year. RIS also competes in the South East Asian Schools Activities Conference (SEASAC), an association of international schools in and around Southeast Asia. During each sport’s annual SEASAC tournament, RIS teams go up against the best schools in the region. Each sport competes in a BISAC tournament at the end of its season, with Varsity teams continuing play in twelve SEASAC sports. Each year, RIS enjoys hosting BISAC and SEASAC Championships here on our Minburi campus, in addition to several friendly tournaments in our multipurpose athletic facilities.
Our athletic calendar is divided into three seasons, each typically 8–10 weeks long, with the exception of our golf and swimming programs that run year-round. Athletics is a key aspect of RIS in all three school sections. In the more common sports, we have sizeable U11, U13, U15, Junior Varsity, and Varsity U19 teams.
